Punch Bowl Inn

You can leave her copy of House & Garden at home when visiting The Punch Bowl Inn. The Farrow & Ball paintwork, twin rolltop baths and exposed beams all lend themselves nicely to Lake District luxury. You may have to take your welly boots and explore alone whilst she instagrams every vista and waxes lyrical to her friends about the underfloor heating throughout but that’s just the price you pay for staying in a designers’ dream.

It’s labelled a ‘restaurant with rooms’ but it gives off the cosiest of airs even supplying Roberts Radios in each of their 9 rooms. But the food is pretty damn marvellous too with ham hock and piccalilli, crab mousse and maple glazed duck breast all on the menu (it’s not one for those watching the waistline – more rustic, country fare) but you can expect lighter dishes with the mackerel pate with rhubarb being a bit of a game-changer.

Being open arms to the locals for a good pint after a heady walk adds to the unpretentious vibe. Pull up a pew in front of the fire and order in their famed clotted tea to keep the arteries heavy after a bracing stroll. You need to keep your energy up for the evening meal ahead.
