Ape and Bird

Don’t be fooled by the Ape and Bird public house label. From the outside it looks like a fairly mediocre pub in the middle of the bustling Theatre District but inside you will find a welcome surprise avoiding a lacklustre meal in one of the many chain restaurants nearby. If you’re the brainchild of Polpo’s genius, Russell Norman, then we also know it has huge potential known for his take on the fast dining culture but losing none of the charm of good waiters and tantalising menus. Expect the Polpo small plate menu here inspired by the Venetian bàcaros with their delicious pizzettes (great for sharing – we love the spinach, parmesan and soft egg version), ham hock and mustard crostinis, a range of inventive meatballs, cod cheeks with lentils and a range of succulent side dishes.  It’s a great one for a long lunch or to make a nice change pre-theatre (it’s just off Shaftesbury Avenue)
