The Painswick

Bagging the recent accolade of The Sunday Times ‘Hotel of the Year’ in 2016 is no mean feat and the Painswick has much to be proud of. Carefully created under the watchful eyes of the Calcot Collection who have the likes of the luxurious Barnsley House and Calcot Manor already under their wing, it’s no surprise that The Painswick has proved quite so popular. Having (thankfully) renovated away the previous ‘funky’ interiors, the new Farrow & Ball paintwork, roaring fires and rustic log baskets suddenly speak volumes of what a stay in the Cotswold should be, and boy, did they get it right.

With 16 gorgeous bedrooms, described with the no frills ‘Small’, ‘Medium’, ‘Big’ and ‘Bigger’, the value for money doesn’t reflect the quality. You can expect roll-top baths in the ‘Bigger’ rooms for around £250 and the Deluxe ‘George’s Suite’ also boasts a Romeo and Juliet balcony for an oh-so-reasonable £350. They’ve also added a little touch of genius, what with their two treatment rooms designed by Calcot Spa: finally a reasonable hotel for the weekend where we can spoil ourselves with a spa treatment.

Staying in the heart of the Cotswold countryside delivers a host of pastimes to keep you busy; cycling is taken seriously here with a pre-planned 75 mile route to take if you’re keen on the burn or walk around the local Arboretum in Westonbirt and local food markets (Stroud market is one of the best in the country). Or kick back and enjoy the hotel. With a restaurant specialising in charcuterie and a mighty fine afternoon tea, this makes the Painswick the perfect weekend destination.
