If you’ve visited Ghent, Bruges or Brussels and think you’ve seen Belgium, think again. Antwerp could, in fact, be one of our favourite cities in the Belgian triangle. The Belgians are known for their incredible sense of style, love of good architecture and great design and Antwerp combines all of these in the bucketload. Located close to an international airport and less than 45 minutes’ drive from Brussels, consider Antwerp for your next romantic / foodie / adventurous weekend away.

This was my second return to Botanic Sanctuary Antwerp, namely for their superb 1,000sqm spa with 18-metre pool, huge whirlpool, three saunas and thermal circuit. You could easily spend the day here and not venture out at all (which we happened to do on the Sunday with a few treatments as the Belgians really shut up shop on Sunday’s and you’ll be hard-pressed to find much open in the city at all).

The rooms are beautiful but varied. In my opinion, it’s worth spending a bit more in order to guarantee the huge egg bathtubs and seating area. The building was once a former 13th century monastery which they’ve tastefully renovated whilst remaining sensitive to the style of the building (think wooden beams, stone floors and gentle, soft linens throughout). Service is friendly and attentive. From the moment you arrive, they take extra care to make you feel special. And brunch here on a Sunday is a destination in itself so be sure to book in advance and add the glass of bubbly to your eggs benedict.

You are right in the heart of the city so it’s easy to get out and about without too much effort. Antwerp spoils with the amount of incredible fashion boutiques but the city was also once home to Rubens (making Antwerp one of Flanders’ five cities of art) so you are spoilt for choice in terms of museums.
