Gotto

Unsurprisingly, it’s gone all ‘industrial’ over East but they are rather foodie forward in this neck of the woods. With its enviable canal side location, Gotto can cue Italian Riviera glamour in Hackney Wick.

This is a neighbourhood trattoria that can throw its doors open on a sunny day and overlook the River Lee. Not too shabby when al fresco space in London is few and far between. The food is simple and fresh, using their daily-changing menu to carry new flavours on their reliably good hand-rolled pasta. All the best Italians know to keep it simple. You’re out East so of course you’re sharing your food. You have no choice. But working our way through Fritto misto, grilled octopus, venison salami and rich Italian burrata ain’t half bad. You can choose also from a simple list of meat and fish dishes if you insist on keeping your food to yourself.

Perfect for any celebratory meal with friends, we’d be suitably impressed if the other half went left field and took us here for a date. Plus the home-made vermouth is really rather good.
