Make sure to pop Sunday 21 June in your diaries and clear the diary having picked up the phone to make a plan with Big D (ask Mum along whilst you’re at it). When Father’s Day arrives there’s really no excuse not turning up with a gift and we’re a little over the tie / sock combo exhausting Peter Jones on the Sunday morning. Instead we’ve selected what we’d consider a home run when it comes to unique gifts; getting Dad away from the ghastly argyle sweaters and putting him a little more with the times. Hopefully it’ll draw some envious gasps on the daily commute. And for all you Dad’s out there who want to mix it up, be sure to send this our Father’s Day Gift Guide out for an unsubtle nudge in the right direction;
The Swede’s know good style and they don’t disappoint with the renowned Sandqvist range. Founded in 2004 by Anton Sandqvist, he works with his brother and friend on durable, uncomplicated accessories inspired by their upbringing in the great Nordic outdoors. This messenger bag is the perfect size to fit a 15 inch laptop and comes in beige or blue made from hardy Cordura cotton and lined with buffalo leather. With a separate shoulder strap we can quite imagine this fitting the W1A image of those trendy media types cycling in on their folding bikes. Ring any bells?
All Dad’s love a pair of slippers, right? We just want them to look a bit more hip, street, ‘groovy’ so if we can get these Axel Arigato numbers on them it might get those toes a-tapping. Lined in calf leather (they’re handmade in Spain no less), these tweed slippers are embroidered with skulls and a wooden stack heel. Perfect for those vertically impaired Pops or those who like to strut around a bit.
Willow & Warson’s Classic Wooden Bow Tie – £100
Willow & Warson create beautiful bespoke wooden bow ties hand-carved in Dorset. The brainchild of two childhood friends who wanted to combine skilled craftsmanship with their love of the great outdoors. You couldn’t get closer to those trees than if you were hugging them. This classic bow tie is made from sustainable wenge wood, with each piece being totally unique and all wrapped in a smart leather case this is the perfect addition to mixing up his evening wear. Alternatively for all those Navy buffs, Willow & Warson have recently launched The Victory Collection; a selection of accessories inspired by Lord Nelson at the Battle of Trafalgar hand-crafted using original timber salvaged from HMS Victory. The limited collection includes bow ties, cufflinks and tie clips.
This is the perfect addition to his wash bag this summer. Not only does it look ultra cool on his bathroom shelf (bare as it may be) but takes him out of his comfort zone and away from that bloody Old Spice. Fusing marine notes of sand, sea salt and all things nautical with lemon and white musk makes the perfect summery scent. Inspired by Salina in the Mediterranean it would work best on a boat with a white shirt on and the wind in his hair. Guaranteed to get Mum’s heart a-fluttering.
Lee Renee Gold Shark Jawbone Cufflinks – £88
Who else has a pair of cufflinks modelled from a real Great White Shark (we’d imagine the shark didn’t sit that still). Handmade in Lee’s North London studio they are typically playful and a bit more original than those sterling silver, snoring same-old cufflinks. Having been hand-carved it’s no wonder the jawbone and tail fin are so intricate in design, ideal for those Dads who like to stand out at parties or in the boardroom. Now we just need to sort out the Dad dancing and he’s turning into quite the dude.
Named after an eccentric 19th century British merchant Captain, Charlie Noble hand crafts their products in the East End with a nod to all things British. Admittedly these are manufactured in France but we must look over the Channel for the finest boules, chrome plated and steel tempered to stand up to robust throwing. Laser engraved back in England with the CN initials these surely beat the dreaded croquet (too many bruised ankles) for a summer of fun.
Biscuiteers’ Personalised Dad’s Big Breakfast Biscuit Tin – £43.50
He might be lucky enough to get breakfast in bed every day but you can ring the changes (and give Mum a break) by sending up this box of personalised biscuits instead. These 16 chocolate biscuits are iced to the extreme featuring bacon, eggs, sausage and beans. The obligatory marmite, ketchup and cup of (builders, we’d hope) tea also appear with the mug of tea being used to show your message of choice to Dad. We’d go with ‘World’s Best’. Never fails.
